Recently, Glen Carlou DTC Manager, Stefan Reinmuth, sat down with Johnnie Calitz, Glen Carlou’s Cellarmaster, to delve into the nuances of the Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2023.
The Unique Terroir
“One of the greatest characteristics of this block is the soil type, quartz, after which this wine derives its name,” Johnnie explains. The quartz-rich soil is not nutrient-dense, which naturally limits excessive vine growth. This balance allows the vines to focus their energy on developing grapes full of concentrated flavours.
Johnnie reminisces about the vineyard, saying, “When you walk through the vineyard, you can see the quartz stones reflecting in the sun. This reflection bounces light back up into the vine canopies, enhancing grape ripening and flavour concentration. That’s truly special!”
Vineyard Practices
Johnnie elaborates on the vineyard’s sustainable practices. Remarkably, there is no need for green harvesting, selective removal of unripe grape clusters, because the soil naturally restricts excess shoot and bunch growth. To maintain optimal conditions, mulches are applied on the soil surface to retain moisture and lower temperatures, while avoiding the rows to ensure sunlight reflects off the quartz stones.
Winemaking Process
In the winery, Johnnie favours a gentle whole bunch press cycle, which preserves the purity and subtlety of the juice. After pressing, the wine undergoes cold settling for up to 48 hours before being transferred to 228l French oak barrels, 90% of which are new for fermentation. The wine is then left on the lees for 11 months, adding depth and texture.
Tasting Notes
Though still young, the Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2023 already offers an enticing bouquet of aromas. Expect notes of spanspek (honey melon), zested lemon, clementine, butterscotch, and ripe yellow apple. On the palate, a racy acidity provides structure, complementing the riper flavours that echo the nose. For those interested in ageing, this wine can be cellared confidently for the next 8-10 years, promising superb development over time.
Pricing and Availability
The Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2023 is available for R455 per bottle for non-club members and R386 for wine club members.
