2019 Tim Atkin (MW) Special South Africa Report
Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, visited the Cape earlier this year, tasting through more than 2000 wines. In his month in South Africa, he visited the most prominent wine-producing regions to gain a better understanding of the current state of the South African wine landscape. In his seventh Special South African Report, Tim Atkin (MW) remains as enthusiastic and positive as ever about the South African wine scene.
Atkin’s statement after his latest visit: “I’m still convinced that the best Cape wines are world-class and represent outstanding value for money. Ever creative, ever-evolving, the wine industry continues to surprise and delight me.”
One of the highlights of his trip this year, was the distinct “sense of place” portrayed by some of South Africa’s top wines. “Wines with a sense of place” is exactly what The Glen Carlou Collection wines represent – an exceptional collection of wines from distinct parcels of vineyards that showcase the absolute best in the varietal.
The Collection Wines, added to the Glen Carlou portfolio in 2018, are all site-specific and a true expression of their terroir, the fruit being what our winemaker believes to be exceptional examples. The production is limited to a few barrels only and not guaranteed to run for more than a single production year.
Each release has its own narrative from origin through winemaking, with distinctive aspects framing the uniqueness of the wine. A Collection of Wines that truly endorse our delight in doing ordinary things, extraordinarily well.
Tim Atkin scored these wines as follows:
The Collection Chenin Blanc: 94 points
The Collection Sauvignon Blanc: 92 points
