The Sommeliers Selection 2019

2019 The Sommeliers Selection

Glen Carlou Chardonnay ‘A Stand Out’ on The Sommeliers Selection List 2019

The Sommeliers Selection offers a different perspective to other wine competitions and ratings. The wines are assessed exclusively by professionally trained sommeliers who evaluate entries as they would consider wines for designing a wine list.

Entries are judged for their food appropriateness and their gastronomical relevance. The judges look at stylistic approaches to wines, regionality and price points. The South African Sommeliers on the panel all have extensive local and international judging and work experience. Their in-depth knowledge of international and local markets, and what the public is looking for in their drinking wines or pairing with food wines is considerable.

Glen Carlou has once again been listed on The Sommeliers Selection List 2019 with our 2019 Cape Town Sauvignon Blanc and 2018 Chardonnay.

Our Chardonnay has made the list annually since the competition’s inception in 2015. This year our Glen Carlou Chardonnay 2018 was rated as a ‘Stand Out Wine’ – a wine which really wowed the judges.

Our 2018 Chardonnay listed in the Elegant & Classy White category is made from 15 diverse sites all kept separate through the vinification process. Each batch is barrel fermented and matured in water-bent French oak barrels for 10 months in a split of 25% 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill. This results in a wine which has very distinctive fresh citrus characters, green apple and pear notes which are evident on the nose and palate. An extended and elegant aftertaste is supported by crisp acid and finely grained tannins.

Our 2019 Sauvignon Blanc was listed in the Economically Savvy Whites. Winemaker, Johnnie Calitz says, “this wine is beautifully brought together with flavours of pineapple, green pepper and gooseberries. It has a well-structured zesty mid-palate balanced by light acidity. The hero unquestionably is the purity of the fruit from which it was made.” Says Winemaker Johnnie Calitz.

Both wines are available at Glen Carlou’s Tasting Room, fine wine retailers and online here for South Africa only.
