Country Life Magazine’s Favourite Merlots
The Glen Carlou Merlot is a firm favourite in our collection and wine writer, Greg Landman recons a favourite in South Africa. In an article for Country Life Magazine, Landman compiled a list of his 16 favourite Merlots to sip this winter.
The 2018 Glen Carlou Merlot was made from 5 different vineyards on the Simonsberg slopes, blended together to create an intriguing Merlot from this appellation. Each vineyard block was fermented separately after extensive cold soak maceration – to extract optimal colour and flavour from the grapes. Only freerun juice was matured for 12 months in 10% new and 90% 2nd to 4th fill French Oak barrels.
Winemaker, Johnnie Calitz, describes the wine as “beautiful on both nose and palate with hints of mint and violets, ripe raspberries, red cherry and black-currant. Subtle oak, with intriguing complexity. This wine has a textured mid-palate outlining finely grained tannins, framing concentrated fruit flavours. This is an honest expression of an individual grape made into a delightful wine.”
