Red Blend Pairing

2017 Collection Red Blend

Michael Olivier’s perfect pairing with Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend

The Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend – a new addition to the Collection (previously known as the Curator’s Collection). The wines are all site-specific and a true expression of their terroir, the fruit being what our winemaker believes to be exceptional examples and the production limited to a few barrels only.

The grapes for the Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend are harvested on the estate and the blend is made up of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% each Cabernet Franc and Merlot, a classic Bordeaux blend. The wines were vinified separately for later blending and matured for 16 months in French oak barrels of which 70% were new.

Winemaker Johnnie Calitz describes this wine, “Cabernet Sauvignon’s vibrant red fruit and cassis combine with Merlot’s plum and vanilla undertones. Hints of tobacco leaf and green bell pepper from the Cabernet Franc round out a complex nose. The full-bodied palate is abundant with blackberry fruit, mint and dark chocolate. Finely grained wood tannins frame a textured extended finish. I am so pleased that this new wine was awarded a Double Gold at Michelangelo International Wine Award and 4.5 Platter stars 2019”.

Michael reiterates Johnnie’s description, and further describes this wine as good as a glass on its own for serious sipping, but simply great with food. In this article, he suggests Christine Capendale’s Red Thai Meatballs and Corn Curry as the perfect partner for the 2017 Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend. Click here for her recipe

Only 2663 bottles of this spectacular blend were bottled, this wine is only available at the winery or on the Glen Carlou online wine store.

This beautiful wine forms part of the Glen Carlou Collection, further consisting of a Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon BlancSemillon/Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec. These wines showcase a collection of wines, endorsing our delight in doing ordinary things, extraordinarily well.
