Meet our People: Q & A with viticulturist Marius Cloete

What is your favourite Glen Carlou wine?

The Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon as it is so soft and is a great pairing with venison. I also enjoy the Classic Chardonnay, which is so versatile, it is great with food and has a good balance of oak.

If we were to choose a wine from another producer or wine region what would be your first choice?

I always enjoy a Sauvignon Blanc from the Elim or Durbanville wine regions.

What do you like to do in your downtime/days off?

I really enjoy sustainable hunting of venison for our home consumption, and being in the outdoors. When I am hunting, I am reminded to appreciate the smaller things in life – beautiful sunsets and the quietness.

What is the best wine you have ever tasted?

A Cabernet Sauvignon I tasted in Napa when I was there in 2001, the name escapes me.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Struisbaai at the sea or anywhere in the Karoo camping, where the only light in the evening comes from candles and the fire.

If you were on a deserted island what three items would you take with you?

A knife, matches or a flint and a 2m x 2m piece of plastic sheeting which could be used for shelter and water collection.

What is on your bedside table at the moment?

A book of affirmations, a lamp and family photos.

How do you define success?

Peace within myself that I have reached my goals whilst maintaining my values.

What is the best part of your job?

Being in the outdoors every day and adapting to nature, every year is different and has its challenges. I appreciate the growth and development of the vineyards and how we farm them, however, my greatest reward is the taste of those grapes in our wines.

What is your favourite food?

You can always catch me in a trap with a peppermint tart, a milk tart and properly made crispy chips.
