People @ Glen Carlou

A dynamic and highly motivated team contributes to our sucess. In combining our spirit of freethinking and enterprise with a mutual pursuit of excellence, we shape our distinctive Glen Carlou personality.

Wayne Pitout

Chairman

My interest in and enjoyment of wine and the need to follow one's passions resulted in the purchase of Glen Carlou in 2016 with my Pactolus Partners. As Chairman, I lead a board of family and friends who over the years have been united by wine. My time is spent between the United Kingdom and South Africa for both business and leisure pursuits as I am a keen sailor and enjoy traveling with my family.

Johan Erasmus

Managing Director

Having worked for various wine companies around the world, I took over the reins at Glen Carlou in May 2009. My passion for people and excellence has seen me steer Glen Carlou through redefining the Company values and business model, as well as improving viticulture and winemaking processes. In my free time I enjoy sailing or I head to the bush in my trusted ‘Landy’.

Johnnie Calitz

Wine Maker

Born and raised in the Little Karoo, with an extensive background in agriculture, I come from a family owned fruit and wine farm in Calitzdorp. I grew up working every single holiday, either pruning or picking fruit, where there is no difference between a workday and a weekend. Since finishing my BSc degree at the University of Stellenbosch in Viti- & Viniculture in 2004, I have more than 20 years experience in the local and international wine industry, with a Postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning and a diploma from the Cape Wine Academy. Having completed harvests in countries around the world, I draw inspiration from experience and current trends to create the best wines possible. When not making wine or travelling and sharing the great wines of Glen Carlou, I enjoy spending time with my family, camping in the great outdoors and trail running.

Petro Beukes

Financial Manager

I grew up in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) where I was exposed to good wine from an early age with my mom working for the Stellenbosch Farmers’ Wineries Group. But it was whilst studying at the University of Stellenbosch that I fell head over heels in love with wine, the wine industry, and my winemaker husband. I am so fortunate as a financial manager to work in the beautiful surroundings of Glen Carlou. At home I love cooking and try out new recipes and pair it with good wine, good friends, and family. I enjoy hiking and exploring new countries and their wine.

Marius Cloete

Viticulturist

I grew up in Kroonstad in the Free State. I ventured down to the Cape and studied at Elsenburg Agricultural College. After farming experiences in England and Worcester, I joined Glen Carlou in 2000. I am told that I have incredible knowledge and understanding of the land! I like nothing better than heading off to the Karoo to become one with nature.

Berenice Barker

International Commercial Development Manager

Having studied and lived internationally for numerous years, I think of myself as a global citizen, with roots in South Africa. There’s a delightful story as to how my career change from gemmology to wine happened and the subsequent attaining of a Wine Masters qualification. Suffice it to say I am still mates with the boyperson in question ! Adding a layer of complexity to my life, I am currently studying towards achieving another degree in Strategic Marketing (MPhil). Study hours are generally stimulated with a glass of our Chenin Blanc, but truth be told it’s the single malts I reach for when the going gets tough. All a far cry from the neon pink jug wine that my neighbour had to buy when I was Los Angeles living and studying as I was underage to purchase!

Lynn Minster

Office Manager & Export Coordinator

I was born in Transkei and moved to the Western Cape when I was eight. After school and studies, I worked in the hotel, vehicle and events industries. I also spent two years working in London, which allowed for some wonderful travels, before starting at Glen Carlou many years ago. I have covered many roles here, and my time is now mainly focused on export logistics from processing all our global orders, through coordinating the various certifications and export documentation required by freight forwarders. Outside of work, spending time with my family, enjoying the beautiful outdoors we have here, gardening, and doing crafts all provide much joy!

Johan Stander

Head Chef

I grew up in George in the Southern Cape. After school, I studied teaching and did my diploma in marketing and small business management. I then persuaded a career as a chef. I studied at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Cape Town. After having worked at a couple of restaurants in the Winelands and Cape Town I started at Glen Carlou. Inspiration for the menu is mainly season-based, working with local suppliers and local produce. In my free time, I like to fish and spend quality time with my family.

Lecinda Olivier

Visitor Centre Manager

Family, friends and an appreciation for people sums up who I am! I studied marketing in Gauteng and have worked across a range of industries. Ten years ago I started working in Account Management and Events, and my focus has always been on developing great relationships with my clients. At Glen Carlou we are fortunate to have a very beautiful setting for your special celebrations, combined with wonderful wine and food, and dedicated people who make your visit memorable. The highlight of any day is when I can spend time getting to know our guests better. I am proud to live in our beautiful country, with a glass of Glen Carlou wine in hand!

Pieter Swanepoel

Inland and Business Development Manager

I graduated from UJ School of Tourism and Hospitality (then Wits Hotel School) and pursued a career in food and wine. Continuing with furthering my wine studies through the Cape Wine Academy, as well as lecturing for the Academy. I just love to talk and share the story of wine and the great world of food and pairings, with a special fondness for great Chardonnays and Bubbles. I am proud of my Doc Martens Collection and enjoy firing up my Weber for a braai in downtime, when not sharing great wine with fellow wine geeks.

Meryl Griffiths

KZN Regional Sales Manager

I was born and raised in KwaZulu- Natal. My experience in pharmaceutical and hospitality sales eventually led to wine sales and distribution. As an ongoing student at the University of Life, I enjoy wining and dining with family and friends and getting lost in novels. Spending time with my precious grandson is a treasure I value.

Jared Uys

Business Development Manager - Western Cape

Originally from Kwa-Zulu Natal, I had the privilege of growing up in the Cape Winelands. After returning to South Africa from a spell in the UK, I began my studies through UNISA. This enabled me to became involved in the wine industry through a tasting room job and having worked a harvest, my passion for wine and everything surrounding the industry was ignited. Before having joined Glen Carlou, I most recently managed coastal and national sales for renowned Stellenbosch wineries. When not doing or drinking what I love; you will find me on the baseball field on a Saturday or exploring the winelands with family and friends.

Phillip Theron

Assistant Winemaker

After finishing school in Bellville, I went to Worcester to do my Diploma in Agricultural Management, with wine as my biggest interest. After studies I started my career at Glen Carlou in 2017 and have enjoyed it ever since. In 2017 I also had the opportunity to do a harvest in Beaune, France and gained a lot of experience. I was honoured by receiving the 'Young Winemaker of the Year' award in 2020 for our Collection Tannat 2018. Unquestionably head winemaker, Johnnie, is a role model for me as I work alongside of him on a daily basis. In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, camping and playing golf.

Christa Swart

Gallery Manager and Curator

I have always been driven by an inquisitive nature. Exploring the world through my passion for art, music, literature, and the natural world. After completing my degree in Fine Art in 2009, I took part in the ABSA L’ATELIER competition in 2010 as one of the top 100 finalists. I joined Glen Carlou in 2019 having previously lectured at the University of Pretoria, worked in art galleries and appraised fine art with Stephan Welz & Co. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is to bear witness to the countless encounters where artworks bring people together. In my free time I enjoy reading, music, gardening, and spending time out in nature.

Heinrich Witbooi

Restaurant Manager

Born and raised in the Boland, I always had a keen interest in food and wine. Although sport, such as gymnastics and pole vaulting were my first love. My career in the hospitality industry started out as a casual employment solution, but soon turned into my lifestyle. My enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of the industry are experienced by anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting me ! In my spare time I enjoy exploring new places with my wife and two daughters, while enjoying good food and wine..

Chelsey White

Digital Marketing

Chelsey is a marketing enthusiast experienced in strategy, research, and consumer behaviour. After graduating with an Honours degree in Social Science from the University of Stellenbosch, I became fascinated by how our thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and perceptions influence how we buy and relate to goods and services. This led me to a digital marketing diploma at UCT and subsequently 6 years as a strategist. I am now forging a path in the FMCG category and using the wonderful platform that is Glen Carlou to carve a niche. When not creating and executing ideas to engage audiences you can find me outdoors as an absolute nature devotee. The more remote or rural, the better. With a good book of course!

Jezayne Smith

Warehouse Manager

Growing up in Robertson and working at a winery I knew wine would be part of my journey forward. I joined Glen Carlou initially as the Tasting Room Manager, which led to completing my level 3 WSET course. This not only broadened my knowledge but gave me a new outlook. I took up the position of Warehouse Manager in January 2019 to further develop my interest in the wine industry. When I am not managing and moving stock, overseeing labeling and logistics operations in and out of the winery, I do enjoy watching rugby and spending time with my family.

Camel Lamprechts

Cellar Foreman

I have been Cellar Foreman since 1992. While it is the busiest time of the year for us, I enjoy harvest time the most. I like knowing that the grapes I help offload into the press ultimately ended up bottled as one of our wines. My best way of relaxing after a full day in the winery is listening to music or watching a good TV program.
